It divides data into particular sized packets and transacts with base station. GPRS proved to be an efficient technology, being lossless, but it was not able to meet high bandwidth requirements. Then EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) technology, an improvement over GPRS, led to a 2.75G network. EDGE has improved bandwidth than that of GPRS. But it still cannot support data intensive applications like Video Calling. ( which will become possible with 3G)
Almost all the GSM networks in India provide either GPRS or EDGE connectivity throughout the country. Vodafone, Idea, Airtel, Aircel, Tata Docomo are some of the good data service providers.
